The Fertile Crescent

The so-called Virginia crescent that arches from Northern Virginia to Richmond to Hampton Roads was fertile ground for Barack Obama on Tuesday. He won 61% in Northern Virginia, 72% in Hampton Roads and a whoppin’ 73% in the Richmond area.

Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax City, Fairfax County, Falls Church, Loudoun, Manassas and Prince William)

Northern Virginia

  • Obama 61% (188,023 votes)
  • Clinton 39% (118,709)

Despite Hillary Clinton’s campaigning in the outer suburbs of Loudoun and Prince William Counties, she did no better in there than she did statewide.

Richmond Area (Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and Richmond)

Richmond Area

  • Obama 73% (95,288)
  • Clinton 27% (34,561)

I know two Republicans from Richmond who switched their votes from John McCain to Obama in the final days before the primary because A. they figured McCain had it sewn up, and B. they wanted to vote against Hillary.

But I think Obama’s drubbing of Hillary in Henrico, which won by 46 points, was most impressive. Obama success in this working-class county could be signs of cracks in Clinton’s coalition.

Hampton Roads (Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and York)

Hampton Roads

  • Obama 72% (134,339)
  • Clinton 28% (52,205)

What really sticks out about Hampton Roads is the ridiculous turnout. Consider this stat from the Post’s Jonathan Weisman:

“By 5:30 p.m., the same number of people had voted in [Rep. Bobby] Scott‘s home precinct in Newport News that had voted in the November 2006 James Webb-George Allen senatorial campaign — a number that far surpassed the turnout for the 2005 gubernatorial election.”

Voters showed up to the polls in record numbers, and evidently to vote for Obama.

One response to “The Fertile Crescent

  1. We put up a map at DCist of the votes by precinct in the District. Though Obama won every one, it’s still interesting to see the breakdown. Great site!
